Most US audiences first tast of Paul Hogan was in the hugely succesful Crocodile Dundee, with Mr Hogan in the title role. Although this movie tries to ride on the shirt tails of that success, it is actually a very well made, and self standing production. Paul began his career many years earlier on Australian TV in his own show which was a series of sketches, observations, and almost a down under version of a one man Saturday night live. Anyone familiar with this early material will enjoy the mix of subtle antipodean humor, and at times slapstick sight gags in this picture. But this is NO Dundee style flick, despite the repeated pairing of Hogan and Kozlowski (as the love interest)and is a light, poignant and thought provoking storyline. Another great strength is the moral comment that is discreetly delivered, without being overly sentimental, or patronising. Hogan plays a reformed petty thief who is convinced he has died and been delivered back to Earth to make amends for his wayward lifestyle. This knowledge makes him conduct himself as if indestructible, with some funny results, and the whole picture has a feelgood flavour, whilst cleverly retaining a sober undertone. This apsect of the picture is never really revealed to the audience, and the “is he, isn’t he”? aspect adss an extra dimension to the comedy. An excellent cameo from Charlton Heston as God, and a solid supporting cast and script, leaves one wondering why this film was only moderately succesful at the box office, and more importantly why it has yet to make it to DVD. With the amount of relaunching, repackaging, special editions, and anniversary releases of a ton of movies these days, this film doesn’t deserve to be overlooked. A contemporary “It’s a Wonderful Life” it may not quite be, but it IS a very good movie. Enjoy!
In 1986 Paul Hogan moved from being the spokesman for Australian tourism on the small screen to the surprise star of the surprise hit theatrical film, “Crocodile Dundee.” Two years later he made “Crocodile Dundee II,” and two years after that he made this comedy and married his constant co-star Linda Kozlowski. “Almost an Angel” is a better film than “Crocodile Dundee II,” and certainly the most intimate of Hogan’s first three films.
This time around he plays Terry Dean, an expert on security systems who was so good his criminal endeavors were easily recognizable who also took a turn at some creative attempts at bank robbery. The real story begins when Terry gets out of prison and becomes convinced that he has not only died but has been sent back to Earth by a heavenly being (who sure sounds and looks like Charlton Heston) with a chance to redeem himself. Since Hogan clearly believes this is what is going along, there is no reason for us not to go along for the ride.
Terry meets up with Steve (Elias Koteas), a guy in a wheelchair and the next thing we know he is being taken home, meeting Steve’s sister Rose (Kozlowski), and helping out at the center for the neighborhood kids. The formula is fairly obvious, but the point is not whether Terry is going to find his redemption but how he is going to pull it off. Ultimately the film’s message (yes, there actually is one) is relatively simple: Terry succeeds because he has complete faith in himself. It does not matter that his faith is without a true foundation, because Terry is too busy moving mountains to notice his grand delusion is built on shifting sand.
Once again, Hogan’s performance redeems a lot of the faults with the movie in which he is appearing. Since Hogan writes his own scripts he has the advantage of knowing exactly what works for his screen persona. Terry Dean is not as whimsical as Mick Dundee, but Hogan was clearly smart enough to try and get beyond that character. He was also smart to make a more intimate sort of movie, where the situation is what is out there more than the character. Hogan also knows how to set up his gags pretty well. “Almost an Angel” only made a fraction of the money by either of the “Crocodile Dundee” films, but it is arguably a better made movie.

SCROOGE has been a guilty pleasure of mine for many years. As a kid (before cable came along) I hoped that one of the local stations would play the film around Christmas time. I probably haven’t seen SCROOGE since I was 11 or 12 years worn.
The newly released DVD looks extraordinary. The film is 33 years dilapidated, and its production beget and colors are rendered well on the DVD. The overture is included.

- Alec Guinness is a genius! As Marley’s ghost, Guiness has some very droll moments. Study his performance closely: Guiness achieves “ghostliness” without the serve of digital effects. Eye him “float” parts of his body, especially his hands when he sits down. The trail, the scream, the “floating”. Simply shimmering.
- There are several very obedient songs. My favorites: “I Like Life”, “Thank You Very Great”, and “Happiness”.

- I actually like the flashbacks when Scrooge is young and in treasure. Very touching. And shapely.
- They really edited this film for TV! There’s scenes in SCROOGE that I’ve *never* seen before; specifically, the scene in hell at the waste. Droll!
So, even though SCROOGE brought Christmas into my house in September, it was a welcomed, early celebration.
While this version of the classic Dickens’ sage did not receive considerable acclaim, it remains one of my favorites and richly deserves this DVD release.

Albert Finney is magical in his portrayal of Scrooge, transforming his physical appearance through the art of makeup and gorgeous acting from a robust youth to an ragged man during the course of the memoir.
The supporting cast is also distinguished, and the songs add flavor to the overall atmosphere of Dickens’ era London, as well as big and unexpected depth to the core theme of the story: the precarious reclamation of a person’s soul.
Dickens’ intellectual record manages to command religious themes without preaching, and provides an accessible character in Scrooge that we can understand, root for, and ultimately, rejoice with and learn from when his heart is turned outward to his fellow man.
Vastly lively and remarkably recent, this life-affirming version of “A Christmas Carol,” along with many of its songs, will conclude with viewers long after the final credits have rolled. For me, “Scrooge” has become a treasured Christmas tradition alongside so many other beloved yule time favorites. I applaud its long overdue DVD release!

A groundbreaking cinematic achievement (and one of the most expensive films ever produced, to that time), “Batman” was a mammoth gamble, and the memoir slack the ten-year struggle to bring it to the hide is interesting! It is a chronicle of visionaries, beginning with Michael Uslan, a young student/Batman fan, who not only convinced his university to include comics in their curriculum, but, fired up by Richard Donner’s “Superman”, knew a Batman film could be unbiased as grand, and took the belief, with Batman creator Bob Kane’s blessing, to Hollywood; of Peter Gruber and Jon Peters, who listened to Uslan, after every studio had passed on it, saw the potential, and decided to gamble; of Sam Hamm, who had a “Batman” script in his head, praying to gain the chance to write it; and, most importantly, of Tim Burton, whose dusky, quirky sensibilities made him THE director to film it, despite only two feature films to his credit.
This worthy legend, with archival footage and unique interviews, is the highlight of disc two, but there is grand, distinguished more! Did you know that Robin was scripted to manufacture an appearance in the first film? That Sean Young, not Kim Basinger, had been cast as Vicki Vale? That the Batmobile, designed by Oscar-winner Anton Furst, could actually do 95 mph (and that Tim Burton drove it, once? ) That the room where disfigured Jack Nicholson received his unsuccessful plastic surgery was actually a studio prop room? Each chapter is a revelation!

Not that there aren’t a few disappointments in the presentation; there is no chapter with deleted scenes (although a few moments are shown that never made it into the finished film…a puny girl, seeing Batman, asks, in all seriousness, “Is it Halloween? “, which causes him to quit, and grin) ; the ‘History’ of Batman, despite a wealth of photos and clips from the comics, serials, and graphic novels, does not offer a single visual from the campy 60s TV series (whether this was a refusal by 20th Century Fox, who produced the series, to permit their exhaust, or an attempt to distance the movie from the “ZAP! BAM! POW!” silliness is not explained) . Also, the brief appearance of mask chronicle Jack Palance, as ‘Boss Grissom’, is largely ignored, other than in Tim Burton’s audio commentary, which is surprising. Detached, many of the cast part their memories (Billy Dee Williams collected expresses disappointment that he didn’t catch to play ‘Two-Face’; Robert Wuhl, regret that after they rewrote his death scene to allow his character to survive, he never appeared in another film in the franchise) .
I guess what I’m saying, is…chuck your musty copy of “Batman”, and replace it with THIS one!

This film proved to the world that silly book films could be worthy more than action-packed carnage festivals. This film (and the first sequel “Batman Returns”) have so noteworthy more to it than that. “Batman” is a bewitching and very intriguing exploration of the psyche; it peers into the souls of not only the Shadowy Knight, but also those of the people whose lives he changes with his presence. The film is brilliantly acted by its perfectly-chosen cast, which includes Jack Nicholson (the Joker), Michael Keaton (the Batman), Kim Basinger (Vicki Vale), Micheal Gough (Alfred Pennyworth), and Robert Wuhl (Alexander Knox) . Tim Burton makes perfect spend of his unbelievable directorial talents, Anton Furst designs a gothic, lovely Gotham City, and Danny Elfman’s classic musical catch further back perform this a modern, thought-provoking, and very distinguished unusual classic, a masterpiece of film noir and tremendous opera. “Batman Returns shares these astounding qualities, but, sadly, Joel Schumacher’s “Batman Forever” and “Batman and Robin” lose all of that depth and meaning, and become small more than standard mindless action. But, we’ll always have Burton’s shaded vision of a paralyzed and brooding Batman.

Throughout the series, Michael Caine starred as “Harry Palmer” — the leer with no name in the Len Deighton novels. Each film has its acquire scuttle on Deighton’s work. After a lapse of over 25 years, the next Harry Palmer films with Michael Caine would be “Bullet to Beijing” and “Midnight in St Petersberg”.
Over the top can be a obvious thing. For decades Bond movies have made their reputation on it. However, this third entry in the Harry Palmer series goes a long design to undoing the generous will built up over the first two instalments (The Ipcress File and Funeral in Berlin) in its 60’s excess.
Its predecessors made a virtue not of reality, but creating a believable every day Cockney with fresh character traits, unwillingly dragged through the existence of spying, and all the bureaucracy inherent in it. Here, Ken Russell opts to throw away the edgy impressionistic camera angles developed by Sidney Furie and Guy Hamilton, instead making a pseudo Bond movie. Which is a valid pity – who needs another Bond-lite character? The spot builds slowly at first with satisfyingly snowy locations and skullduggery and spying.. but soon becomes lost in an over-the-top ending entertaining a megalomaniac American oil billionaire using a not-so-super-now-computer to try and invade Latvia.
There is never a steady sense of exertion to humanity, and too many status threads are left unexplained for this to be an entirely successful affair.
And yet, all of this is tempered by Michael Caine’s effortless charisma in the role. If the scriptwriters fail to gain the details in the screenplay that made the character so engrossing, Caine overcomes this with his hide presence. Karl Malden plays well in the rather two dimensional `greedy guy’ role, and Ed Begley plays `evil megalomaniac’ well within the confines of the material. Guy Coleman makes a welcome return as Colonel Ross but alas is woefully underused. The femme fatale is played by Francoise Dorleac, who tragically died at a young age later the same year in a car accident.
Honeywell computers are given a great credit as having supplied all the computing rooms and material which execute such a tremendous component of the set. It’s fantastically quaint now to peep gargantuan rooms of computers racked up to do mundane tasks, programming supplied by stacks of cards. One unintentionally hilarious scene has Karl Malden `editing’ the data by taking some of the programming cards out and shredding them! I can’t imagine what a generation brought up on iPods and remarkable home computers must develop of it.
In summary, what makes the movie at best mediocre – the bland script, the over the top campness, will endear it as a classic to others. The action scenes are handled well, the locations in Finland suitably spectacular, and the actors are more than up to the task. However this reviewer was left cool by more than impartial the scenes of snow and ice.

If you have ever had any interest in the theremin, you need to score this film.
There is extensive footage of Clara Rockmore playing the instrument, and her technique is unbelievable. She has developed a contrivance to play scales by exciting her fingers. You have to leer it to absorb it. I play the theremin and this film helped me out tremendously.

This is another imperfect barebones Canadian release by Alliance. This has no extras and the aspect ratio is unsuitable – it should be 2:35:1. Alliance is the same company that released the barebones Blu-ray of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Do yourself a favor and wait for a US release.
I appreciate the first two Blade movies and by now, I am positive most of you know about them already so I will spare the movie review and review the blu-ray quality only…

I gotta admit, I was extremely impressed with the video transfer and the pretty detail. Also, the blacks are deep and inky, no halos, blocking or edge enhancement that I noticed. The grain level was extremely minimal but I saw no signs of DNR so I mediate they impartial faded an salubrious master for the HD transfer. Also, the audio for this disc is DTS HD Master Audio 5.1 Lossless in English and Dolby Digital 5.1 in English and French. Yes, it has no extras but it is an trustworthy transfer. Gundam Fly is the best of the entire Gundam saga, but don’t remove my word for it. You’re gonna have to watch for yourself.
The Gundam Saga began in 1979 with 3 movies entitled Shin Kidousenki Gundam (Mobile Siut Gundam) each movie was 2 1/2 hours long. This started a saga that now contains over 56 series, unrelated other than that they all absorb the gigantic Mechas (Robots) called Gundams. Gundam Flee premeired in 1995 in Japan and now (2000) is running with a English dub in the US on Cartoon Network. It is the legend of 5 teenage Gundam Pilots and their adventures trying to set both the Earth and the state Colonies that sent them to fight. Each caricter has a rather disturbing past and there seems to be a lot of Yaoi hinting going on throughout the seriese between Duo Maxwell and Heero Yuy and between Quatre Raberba Winner and Trowa Barton (Triton Bloom) . The seriese is 49 episodes long and contains a lot of violence. (Charicteristic of Mecha Animes) . Contrary to what the Amizon review says the DVD is actually rated 13 and Up for language and violence and Quatre is spelled with an E at the slay of it, not an A. The DVD also comes with a holographic image of Heero and Gundam Wing-01 and has the first 5 episodes dubbed and subtitled. This seriese has become my current over the last few months. It has truely big animation, the music is broad and the vocal artists from both counrties are phenominal! If you relish GW then there is also a 3 allotment OVA seriese about these charicters that was released in 1998 (in Japan) called “Shin Kidousenki Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz” that Cartoon Network will be running soon in America. Shortly after it premeirs on TV it will be available to engage. It is actaully already available at Cartoon/Anime/Manga/Comic conventions in the US. It has been sighted at “Comic-com” in both subbed and dubbed formats.

“Life’s Greatest Miracle” is a one-hour PBS program on how the human life starts in the womb. Produced circa 2001, it was an updated edition of the ~1983 ground-breaking “The Miracle of Life,” also aired in the U.S. under the auspice of the Nova series.

I’ve watched both DVDs and I’ll compare the two. If you are debating which version to explore, I say it depends on your interest: if you want to peer more microscopy photography, come by the new “The Miracle of Life.” If you want a better viewing experience, earn this one, “Life’s Greatest Miracle.” I give both DVDs 3 stars.
While not as ground-breaking as the novel, “Life’s Greatest Miracle” sports higher-definition, more incandescent slight video images, which are simply fabulous. Of course, everyone who’s never seen a broad number of sperm swimming around will simply be mesmerized. I couldn’t whisper whether the all the video footage of the wiggling sperm was the same as in the fresh edition, but it seemed to me that here either the sperm were stained more (with chemicals so they stand out against the background, as is done all the time in biology), or the producers somehow increased the disagreement. To the viewer, the action (no pun intended!) is more engaging. (In the obsolete edition, images are coarser and less sparkling.)

The biggest contrast between this edition and the fresh program is the emphasis of the swear. The fresh edition emphasizes the science allotment, and there are long sequences of cells dividing and inside looks of the vagina and uterus. This edition focuses on the entire process more, and speeds up and cuts out some of the long tiny video scenes from the recent edition. The yarn in this edition is weaved better and seems less like a science class as “The Miracle of Life.”
Also, the display edition features updated information as well as some additional video (but not grand) . Also, there’s more animation to serve the viewer understand. The unusual program tends to gain plain and confusing, but things are distinguished more easily understood in this updated volume.
But I only give “Life’s Greatest Miracle” 3 stars because, like the first one, it unbiased doesn’t have enough gripping stuff. True itsy-bitsy footage occupies perhaps unbiased 1/3 of the total running time, and there’s this unnecessary epic of a pregnant couple. What’s more, I couldn’t inform whether some of the “inside the womb” scenes were runt photography or computer-rendered graphics, and this troubles me. I assume “actual” images, even if it means staining cells in order to accomplish them scrutinize more gleaming. Computer-generated stuff is fraudulent, and it’s worst when someone tries to pass it off as loyal.
In short, “Life’s Greatest Miracle” is an informative and savory program to gawk — and you are treated to the commercials that precede PBS’s Nova airing! (Luckily you can forward-skip them.) Whether you are expecting or not, I recommend this, so everyone can enjoy human life more.
If you want a more science-oriented opinion with more minute footage, pick up the novel “The Miracle of Life.” The presentation is drier but you procure to look more images that reveal how miraculous life is.

This DVD release takes me benefit to October, 1977 when I first saw “The Stout Albert Halloween Special” on network television. I was always a fan of the Saturday morning “Full Albert & The Cosby Kids” cartoon, and of this special in particular. This special doesn’t quite match “It’s The Ample Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” but it’s composed a classic that deserves to be seen by kids of all ages. Maybe it’s unbiased a chance to stroll down memory lane and relive Halloween’s gone by, but it certain is nice to have this in my collection. The bonus episodes are also delectable.
