Like most baby boomers, I’ve watched this film dozens of times in the past on broadcast TV, then VHS tape, then LaserDisc … but I had never actually SEEN “The Wizard of Oz” until this newly restored DVD came out. It’s an extraordinary transfer. The sepia-tone Kansas sequences are startlingly appealing and definite, and the Technicolored world “Over the Rainbow” is truly sparkling. I found myself fascinated by details I had never noticed before: the glittering corn stalks in the Scarecrow’s field; the mirror-like floors of the Emerald City; the polished buttons on the guardsmen’s uniforms. Incredibly, even the individual grains of red sand in the Witch’s hourglass stood out and glistened! All these minor-but-sumptuous visual details served to heighten the magical spell that the film has always woven, enhancing the performances, the narrative, and the music.

The DVD extras are a mind-boggling embarrassment of riches. The “Making Of” documentary hosted by the incomparable Angela Lansbury is worth the trace of the DVD alone, but there’s so mighty more: an international poster gallery, interviews with cast members, deleted scenes, production stills, radio clips, etc, etc. There’s enough material to hold even the most casual viewer fascinated for hours, and a suitable Oz buff will be occupied for days!

If you only bought a DVD player to peer this one disc, it would well be worth the expense. Treat yourself, and drop in admire with this classic film again … for the first time.

I was objective critized for foisting off the following review of the 3-disk DVD position as a review of the current Blu-ray. I didn’t; Amazon did. As anyone who’s been here for a while will glance, Amazon throws all DVD reviews into the same bucket, regardless of the edition. So don’t blame me.

There’s no need to discuss “The Wizard of Oz” itself, a classic among classics (though I’ll have something to say about its “philosophy” later on) . You probably want to know whether the UltraResolution transfer justifies the occupy.

It does. Oh, yes it does.

“The Wizard of Oz” has always looked fine, one of the better Technicolor films. Unlike “Gone With the Wind”, which was generally unlit and desaturated, and which UltraResolution greatly improved, I didn’t question considerable enhancement for “Oz”.

Was I ever immoral. I stared with my jaw hanging initiate. “Oz” is the best UltraResolution transfer by far — and the others were not exactly chopped liver.

The improvement in detail and sharpness is startling, especially as the modern prints did not seem obviously lacking in either. Even more fabulous is the expansion of the tonal scale. Dismal scenes (particularly those in the forest and outside the “witches” castle) are now filled with rich detail. Have you ever noticed how attractive the Winkies’ red, white, and gray uniforms are? I hadn’t — until now.

These enhancements combine make the biggest improvement of all — a major revelation of _texture_. The “feltiness” of many costumes is sure. The burlap of the Scarecrow’s face is now plainly visible, particularly in the close-up where he misstates the Pythagorean Theorem. And the Lion’s costume is a thick pile of fur you want to near out and stroke. You can seek every last strand of hair.

I’m exaggerating only slightly when I say the improvements of this UltraResolution transfer are not distinguished less than those from cleaning the Sistine Chapel’s frescos. It’s as if layers of murk and grime — that you never even knew were there! — have been stripped away. Until you thought it, you cannot imagine what this film (that is, the unique camera negatives) _really_ looks like. It’s a shame the people who created “Oz” never got to scrutinize it this plot.

The image quality is so high that I often felt as if I were looking through a window at live performers. (Well, almost.) No matter what versions you already have, you won’t be disappointed with this one. I watched it twice in two days, and I might even plan it a third time tonight.

My only quibble is that several matte paintings do not blend properly, because the hues at the join lines do not match those of the scene. This could have been fixed; I suspect it seemed too remarkable work for a dinky improvement. (A friend suggested that these sorts of things are left in because videophiles indulge in finding them.)

As to the differences between the two- and three-disk sets… The latter includes a packet of novel programs and promotional material of the sort we haven’t seen in 40 years ago. (Remember the 50-cent deluxe programs for road-show films? ) There’s also a residence of 10 reproductions of Kodachrome publicity photographs. For this viewer, these extras alone interpret the higher trace.

The third disk will be of most interest to lovers of all things Oz. It includes a handsomely produced biography of L. Frank Baum (animated enough that you might want to look it more than once), plus all the still Oz films and a Technicolor Oz cartoon. The existence of these is celebrated to anyone familiar with the history of Oz productions, but they’ve never appeared (as far as I know) in any home-video format.

The films are problematic. The two from Baum’s production company are the best — they have style, charm, and imagination. The others are cheesy ripoffs that enjoy miniature relation to the current book. The Larry Semon — a once wildly-popular but now virtually forgotten cartoonist and laughable * — version is especially evil, as it is diminutive more than a vehicle for Semon’s mark of physical comedy. The Baum estate is at least partly to blame — _any_ movie version must have seemed more beautiful than none, especially as the technology to perform a convincing version of “Oz” would not exist for another 15 years.

The film’s opening titles praise the book’s “reliable philosophy”, which seems to be either “You already have everything you need to be joyful”, or “The respond to your problems lies within yourself”. These are not so worthy “superior” as reflections of the hard-nosed “All your problems are your bear fault” and “If you’re not a success, it’s because you’re slothful” homilies that grew out of the large opportunity for personal development and material success this country offered.

I have L. Frank Baum had something a bit different in mind. “The Wizard of Oz” is a fairy sage in which magic has no bearing on the issues at the center of the fable. I contain Baum wanted to discourage children from fantasizing that magic could be a solution to one’s problems.

So… he has the four principals perform a grueling trudge to the Emerald City, then accumulate the wizard is a humbug. (What a shame the blander “erroneous”, “fraud”, or “phony” have replaced that enjoyable word.) He posesses no magic to supply wit, admire, or grit, which the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion have demonstrated they already have.

Baum’s “fair” is simple — Like, wisdom, and courage are what we need to net through life. No one can _give_ them to us, because we _already_ bear them, and all we need to do is content them.

“Is that upright? ”

“That’s all it is.”

Now… the ask you’ve been waiting for the reply to… Is the Blu-ray space worth the tag?

I viewed the Blu-ray on a Pioneer 60″ Pro Kuro, fed from a Sony BDP-S550. I also watched the DVD on the Pioneer (fed from the same Blu-ray player), and on a 36″ Sony 400-series WEGA “improved definition” TV (fed from a Sony DVP-S7000) .

The DVD remains a terrific DVD, and looks terrific on a high-quality 480i monitor. (Contemplate the preceding review.) It was, and calm is, a demo-quality DVD.

When played on the BD player, and upconverted to 1080p, the DVD’s image on the Kuro is lovely darn friendly — the sharpness and detail are at least “acceptable”. But when you play the Blu-ray disk, the image goes from “acceptable” to almost-startling. Two examples… Stamp the enhanced detail and texture in the weather-beaten wood above the WWE’s tiresome legs. And in the crowd scenes, you can perceive (impartial about) every Munchkin face. There is virtually no smearing of detail.

So… should you hasten moral out in a buying frenzy and secure the BD edition? It depends.

The DVD is top-notch enough for an beneficial report on a high-quality SD monitor. But even upconverted, it isn’t superb enough for a _large_ HD note. If you have, say, a 40″ display; your BD player has a respectable upconverter (not all do) ; and you don’t sit “on top of” the mask (as I do) ; you might notice minute disagreement between the DVD and the Blu-ray.

But if you’re a video fuss-budget (as I am) and sit closer than the “experts” recommend (why _shouldn’t_ you? ), you will almost certainly take the Blu-ray. It’s your call.

A few remarks on the extras… The wristwatch, as the kid in the Ally bank commercial says, is a part of junk. The get shows no particular style, wit, or imagination. And as others have said, “The Dreamer of OZ” is a sorrowful transfer, very badly unpconverted to 1080. It is not of acceptable quality, and should have been do on the DVD disk.

I will arrive abet later (I hope) with some more comments on the sound and the other extras. Forcing yourself to repeatedly leer substantial chunks of a movie, regardless of its quality, is an ennervating experience.

If you’re a fan of the movie “Spartacus”, this is the version to get; the Universal DVD is as bare bones as they rep with unprejudiced the movie. The Criterion version looks gigantic. The facelift the film received assist return remarkable of its luster. Kubrick stated that his intent at the time was to subvert the cliches of the genre. As a result, Kubrick manages to reinvent a genre that was in concern of becoming a parody of itself. As a collaborative inconvenience, Spartacus is a large part of entertainment and far more sophisticated than almost everything else that came out of Hollywood at the time.

The transfer is splendid with noteworthy of Kubrick’s valiant spend of color restored. The strong acting of most of the cast has always been a virtue of Sparatcus. The soundtrack has been meticulously transferred to 5.1 and Alex North’s beatiful obtain has never sounded so sweet, tragic and considerable before. The audio commentary is the same one that was on the laserdisc version. It provides additional concept about the complexity of making an independently produced project like Spartacus. Kirk Douglas’ heroic decision to earn the film himself (with Universal-International distributing) was a leap of faith in both the material and the talented director.

The second disc is stuffed with supplements that are found nowhere else.There’s two older interviews with Peter Ustinov, Jean Simmons plus one that Ustinov did in 1992 for the laserdisc edition. It’s toothsome and he shares a number of comical stories about the narrate. There’s also a text overview of Kubrick’s career and his involvement with the relate. Included also are sketches Kubrick made for the motion report (artistically they’re nothing special but they do provide insight into Kubrick’s role in the visualization of the film) . Long before Russell Crowe picked up his sword and battled foul Roman emperors, Kirk Douglas showed him the design in “Spartacus”. This narrative 1960 film aloof ranks as one of the best performances in Douglas’s noted career, and it marked his second collaboration with distinguished director Stanley Kubrick. Even more than “Gladiator”, “Spartacus” is based on a proper historical event, although it greatly exaggerates the trusty history. Spartacus was a Roman slave in the first century AD who became a gladiator for the Romans, but then escaped and formed an gigantic army (estimated at anywhere from 50,000 to 75,000) of freed slaves and gladiators. For the next year this army, under Spartacus’s leadership, timid the Italian countryside, until they were finally trapped and destroyed in battle with the still-powerful Roman Army. Gracchus tries desperately to withhold Crassus from becoming a dictator and destroying the freedoms of the Roman Republic. He fails, but nonetheless emerges as the sole Roman hero of the movie. Peter Ustinov steals every scene as the bumbling and craven owner of a gladiator training school who rescues Spartacus from determined death and makes him into a gladiator, then reluctantly helps Gracchus regain one last “victory” over Crassus by stealing Crassus’s current treasure interest (and Spartacus’s musty wife) and taking her to freedom. As for the slaves, Douglas is salubrious as Spartacus – if the sincere Spartacus had been as obedient and audacious as Douglas’s character, then Roman history might have been very different! (Historically, the steady Spartacus and his slave army could have escaped from Italy, but instead went on a wild looting and stealing spree across the Italian countryside, thus eliminating any upright advantage they had over their dismal Roman masters, and also throwing away their chance to bag permanent freedom. This led many sympathetic Romans to join the fight to crush the slave revolt, which was done, brutally) . Jean Simmons portrays Spartacus’s “wife” (they’re never legally married) as a strong and proper woman; and Tony Curtis is the cultured and well-educated, but also tragic slave of Crassus who escapes and becomes like a son to Spartacus. The scene approach the ruin of the movie where Crassus forces the two men to fight to the death is especially poignant. In many ways this is a movie ahead of its’ time – it delicately but aloof decisively suggests that Crassus was bisexual and had a strong sexual interest in Tony Curtis’s character (which caused his character to sprint from Crassus’ estate) . In terms of scope, emotional impact, and visual splendor it’s hard to top this film. Anyone who’s fervent in the golden age of Hollywood films and enjoys watching some legendary actors in their prime will like “Spartacus”!

The second and last of the Aaru Doctor Who films, Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 AD, is basically the film version of the second Dalek yarn, The Dalek Invasion Of Earth, and outdoes the previous Aaru film. Instead of Ian and Barbara, we have Louise, the Doctor’s niece, and Tom Campbell, a constable who after being coshed on the head by some robbers, stumbles into the TARDIS honest as its course has been space.

The point in making a film rendition of a TV series is to improve on the unique, lawful? Well, this film does do that in many areas, which is what bigger budgets are for. The scene of London in ruins is realized more effectively. Considering how the current serial for this was 150 minutes long, condensing it to 80 minutes and calm getting the cream of the residence is quite a feat.

The brass march of the Robomen is snazzy and lickety-split. The Robomen themselves are dressed in glossy gloomy fetish suits with whips and have goggles over their eyes. I know this wasn’t a BBC production, but I’m surprised why they didn’t think that kinky and they backtracked on having a villainess in jackboots too risque in Colony In Spot.

The most valuable improvement are the Dalek flying saucers, whose two windowed allotment rotate in opposite directions. They are the most effective in aerial shots, but are done apt to scale in ground shots, as when the prisoners are escorted to the landing strip where it is parked.

There is a comical scene titillating Tom, disguised as a Roboman. He has anxiety marching in sync with the other Robomen, and this includes eating, as they all eat in unison.

The claw-arm Daleks outnumber the standard sink-plunger arm Daleks, and these Daleks have a lively paint job, enhanced by the fact that they are in colour.

Peter Cushing makes a expedient Doctor, the gentle archetypal absent-minded professor. Roberta Tovey reappears as Susan. As a movie for kids, it’s gleaming and fun. But if you go into it expecting the same quality as the point to, you’ll secure it very disappointing and more than a microscopic cheesy. Keep your money.

I had read reviews of this DVD and wanted to assume it for my Spanish classroom as a supplement for a unit about bullfighting I had created. This was a perfect edition to the unit and one of the best purchases I ever made for teaching. I got the DVD yesterday in the mail and watched it last evening and absolutely loved it. I was so impressed by all the extras added in the DVD and the film itself was outstanding and VERY impressive. The breathtaking cinematography is unbelievable, I wish I could have seen it on the immense mask. The music is stunning and very distinguished. I cannot say enough about the film. If someone is an educator or simply enthusiastic in bullfighting, this is a MUST.

My interest in Norman McLaren’s work started with the handful of the American shorts (made in NYC) that he worked on. They were included on the pleasant Unseen Cinema box position (7-disc state from Image Entertainment and Anthology Film Archives) . YouTube also has several of his short films.

I was too gradual on buying the “Creative Process” 2-disc dwelling that Milestone place out since it’s out of print and fetching over $150 for dilapidated copies. Well, this box region from the NFB and Home Vision completely went under my radar camouflage. Not only is it in print, but it has every existing film by McLaren.

The NFB’s current digital restorations are absolutely radiant. Layers of dirt, flickering, and scratches are gone. Since his hand-drawn films were made unconventionally (india ink on determined film with color added in optical printing), color had not maintained its quality on some. They were able to color good them to the point where the color jumps off the cloak and it looks trace unusual!

The supplements are profitable, too. The 15 featurettes cloak every aspect of McLaren’s films. There’s also longer documentaries, outtakes and test footage, as well as synthetic sound tests. To top it off, the station has seven discs in thinpaks and a tall booklet. Most of the films also have a choice of the current monaural audio, stereo, and 5.1. While the older films aren’t that enhanced, a few really stand out in the 5.1 remix. Neighbours, Synchromy, and Pas de Deux sound amazing in 5.1.

The films themselves are usually gigantic. The hand-painted works like Begone Humdrum Care, Stars and Stripes, and Fiddle-de-dee are visual delights. The live-action films are often humorous, but often gorgeous. Neighbours is hilarious, but disturbing since it shows how ridiculous fighting can be (like in wars) . Pas de Deux is probably the most handsome film I’ve seen. The combination of the swelling music and the silhouetted dancers really works well.

Overall, glean this position if you’re an animation fan. These may near off as pretentious or inaccessible, but McLaren’s best are objective as fun to inspect as a Looney Tune.

Awesome plot! the films have been re-mastered, and they see without doubt amazingly! MacLaren was an arist with visionary poetry. For him the clash of two shots constituted more than a mere mechanical artifice, it meant a fresh language, which he explored and advanced enormously.

For me McLaren’s works are an mammoth source of inspiration. I remember when I watched “Neighbors” for the first time, I was astounded by the procedure he created his movements, and in the same time I realized that Norman McLaren is a genius, a suitable “poet of animation”, how he was called.

Norman McLaren said that he was influenced by Sergei Eisenstein’s films, and indeed, the influence of Eisenstein is seen in many of his films. Also, Eisenstein’s conflict (”Art is always conflict”) becomes in McLarens `films either movement or verbalize.

First, in “Neighbors” “the conflict” becomes the battle between Munro and Ladouceur, in “A Chairy Memoir” is the fight between Jutra and the chair, in “Opening Speech” is the philosophize between McLaren and the microphone.

Second, where “the conflict” becomes movement, it becomes the “conflict” of forms, is the one that is seen in “Begone Tiring, Care”, in “Le Merle”, in “Fiddle-de-dee”, or in “Hen Hop”.

Also must be remembered that like Eisenstein, McLaren “reinvented” the monumental pose, the “mi-e” from the Japanese Kabuki Theatre, and I acquire that “Pas de Deux” speaks for itself. Also, when I watched “Pas de Deux” or “Narcissus”; I remember experiencing something that a few movies could manufacture me feel. I am talking about that kind of experience when the body is static, and the only thing that is “racy”, is the mind. I am talking, of course, about the feeling of escaping time and area. And this happens only when the film is not made by an ordinary filmmaker, but an exceptional one. I must add here, that the same experience I had when I watched “The Passion of Joan of Arc”, “Ivan Grozny” or “Orpheus”.

In conclusion, I have to say that I reflect Norman McLaren one of the most prolific filmmakers of the last century, and I contain that his works rotten with Eisenstein’s films or Cocteau’s works.

Our children learned their Letters, Numbers and Shapes from the other videos by this company so we didn’t hesitate to rob Meet the Colors. It did not dissapoint! Our 18 month mature daughter watched it once a day for about 2 weeks and could name all the colors easily. She is now so fascinated with colors that everyone she goes, she is pointing out anything and everything and telling me its color. I highly reccomend this and any other product from this company.

With the AAP guidelines on television viewing for children under two, many people grief about allowing a baby or toddler to behold any videos at all. I consider it’s fairly pleasurable to say that this particular video is not going to increase a child’s risk of ADD/ADHD. (I write this as someone who watches no television at all herself and allows her son to gawk one age-appropriate, short DVD per day.) There is no rapid cutting. There is no rapidly movement. There is nothing in this video that could remotely be called over-stimulating. This video is probably more sedate than regular playing in the living room. I can’t stand to sit through it.

And yet, my 16 month former son loves it. He asks for this video by name–”Coh! Coh! [meaning Colors! Colors!]” He loves to call out the names of the colors when they slowly toddle onto the cover.

Educational, savory (for my son), and not, I assume, a contributor to a short attention span–that’s a home rush in my book.

…but considering the minimal budget (20 million dollars American) and the friendly Mongolian (some areas so isolated that current roads had to be built to bag the film crews there) locations filmed, this was a astonishing movie that was well-paced for an introduction to the life of Temudjin, who would become the Genghis Khan.

Despite the improper budget, nothing in the movie looks cheaply filmed; everything looks like that of a enormous budget film six times more expensive, from costumes to makeup (and the craggly dirt buildup on Temudjin during his time in captivity) . I don’t converse Mongolian, so I can’t roar whether the accents spoken are accurately Mongolian, but for an American audience, it was mountainous for authenticity (rather than having them content Russian or Kazakh) .

While Genghis Khan is demonized in the West as a barbarous conqueror, he is seen like a hero in the East, and this movie serves to explain him as both and neither, making him more than fair shadowy or white, but a fully fleshed out person with ambitions to uniting all the Mongol tribes as one beneath him. He is utterly believable as a human being, fallible, and seemingly very remarkable driven by his like for his wife and children, whom he nevertheless must leave constantly to fulfill his dream.

There is also Jamukha, who manages to be both a piggish, slothy figure, and a favorable, valid friend to Temudjin, when their dreams conflict and they become enemies, with a very painful and realistic portrayal of impartial why Jamukha would betray Temudjin, and his lack of joy in facing his opponent on a field of battle.

Then there’s the battles. As any Ancient/Medieval war movie to be expected, it is bloody. My only annoyances in a puritanic-historian plot were the suits of armor, which seemed not to be made of powerful metal as they would have been in Mongolian times.

Another minor thing that becomes a miniature excessive, and arguably rather like a recurring joke is shots of blood, showing them being spilled in thousands of thick drops rather than in fountains or bursts of liquid.

The final battle sequence manages to both exercise the Mongolian expertise in archery and cavalry and innovate with something both insanely dangerous and never before seen in Medieval battle depictions. Likely seen in the trailer, as Jamukha sends the bulk of his cavalry force at Temudjin’s center, he unleashes a very petite number of thickly armored cavalry, armed with double curves swords, which then run through the enemy cavalry, using the swords to gash at the enemy’s sides like Scythed Chariots.

The armored cavalry is a kamikaze force, as after brutalizing the enemy cavalry, Temudjin has his archers unleash a flood of arrows on the force, killing the cavalry on both sides down to a man.

Overall a broad movie, which doesn’t sacrifice the macro-story of Genghis Khan and his dream of a Mongol empire for the micro-story of Temudjin’s admire life. Of which I wrote virtually nothing about.

Recent Best Foreign Oscar Film nominee `Mongol’ is an impressive legend. Telling the first installment of the life and times of Ghengis Khan, we come by more than a history lesson, but a personal story of a fraternal feud for power. Filmed with breathtaking cinematography and a sound that should have garnered a separate nomination, the movie is a sweeping drama, complete with battles that fabricate similar `300′ scenes clear digitalized formula.

Although the film goes ahead (mostly in chronological order) with several “One Year Later” and other useful captions, we lose ourselves in a account of one man’s struggle for survival among his Khan and the worship interests that shape, bind and fill tribal rivalries and aspirations. We follow the coming-of-age footsteps of Temujin (Tadanobu Asano) and his older rival Targutai (Amandu Mamadakov) who both strive for power and read the oracles of gods like Tengri, whom they beckon for serve.

Some of the battles are Trojan-like in thrust. Temujin will spare no one for Borte (Khulan Chuluun), his lifelong treasure interest. Between his patient endurance and his worship, Temujin becomes a leader who can match wills with any Mongol tribe. Going from tribal feuds to a far-reaching dynasty, the film chronicles the trusty human faces that made history happen.

Before becoming Khan, he must master the elements. Between the harshness of tundra to humiliation and hunger, the inspiring edge of life known for bitterly frigid winters, beget or shatter the existence of people who rely on their armies, shelter, and horses to survive.

It cannot be emphasized enough how the lingering beauty of each frame is enchanting enough to account for viewing this two hour and five miniature film. Furthermore, the haunting audio accentuating tribal customs and battle scenes resonate with mesmerizing grandeur. Although being reserved is perhaps a cultural trait, I felt some of the scenes could have added a bit more zest to the acting, but powerful of the intensity is non-verbal and convincing indeed. Writer-director, Sergei Bodrov, deserves heaping praises for building such a tightly built drama and some truly exquisitely shot scenes.

Although released last year and up for 2007’s Oscar jury, both the cinema and DVD releases came about this year, so it’s not too slow to own ‘Mongol’ as one of the truly friendly epics and one of the best movies to reach out all year.

I’m definite that anyone spending the time reading reviews of this Honeymooners Box Spot, doesn’t need any reassurance as to the expose itself. What more needs to be said about Ralph and the gang? The mammoth 39 episodes never fail to exclaim. The Honeymooners remain the prime example of television comedy at it’s zenith. The display, while serving as a extraordinary time capsule of it’s era, is astoundingly new, having old-fashioned beautifully. *********About the Box Set************As I read other reviews here I realize that there is some confusion regarding this dwelling. It almost makes me absorb that there is another box residence floating around. Anyway, the one I am referring to was objective released November 2003…(not distinct why even Amazon has it listed as 2000) . I stare that others are complaining that the shows are not chronologically placed on the discs, but grouped thematically. While that would be a runt annoying to me as well, such is NOT the case with the station I purchased…all are in the order that they were originally aired with the airdates given. Another complaint that I’ve seen posted is in regards to the quality of the transfers themselves. Once again, I can’t imagine that these reviewers are seeing the same Box Spot as I am. I am a rather picky viewer and try to stop informed…I’ve never seen the prove perceive or sound better. Pretty Gloomy and White. (I will attest to the fact that the episode “TV or Not TV” does not view or sound as reliable as the rest, probably inherant in the source material…not a biggie though) . As far as extras…not grand here. The Anniversary special included here is a shortened version and isn’t all that informative or even valuable for that matter. Yes, it would have been nice to have more extras…interviews, commentary, bio’s, etc…, but for the sign of this position, you are getting the gold, which is the present itself. I believe CBS/Paramount realized that people are becoming wary of enormous, expensive box sets, and aren’t purchasing them. Case in point…Fox went all out in their release of Mary Tyler Moore Season One. Big packaging, loaded with extras, large transfers. Now they are claiming that it didn’t sell enough to warrant their releasing of any further seasons. So fans are left hanging with a big Box Position of Season One…with no more to arrive. Ridiculous! ( Fans of that exhibit have started a petition…if enthusiastic go to mtmshow.com) ******All in all, since the Honeymooners only had one season filmed, it could have been released with more extras, but with a display of this caliber it certainly stands on it’s contain merit. For under $40, to have the complete Honeymooners crisp on certain on DVD…how can you complain?

Having been born 24 years after the initial showing of the Honeymooners, I might not be the target audience that came to mind when this DVD collection was assembled. Humorous is comical, however, and these “Classic 39″ episodes of the Honeymooners are the funniest half hours ever shown on television and the greatest set comedy of all time.

You honest don’t observe shows like this now. Nothing is this well acted or this well written. And nothing is fair this humorous. This is a husband and wife struggling to accumulate by and they notice like it, too. This “Friends” where the cast lives like millionaires. This isn’t “Fraiser” where they work in some high-profile industry. Ralph drives a bus and Norton works in the sewer (an “underground engineer.”) The Kramdens and Norton are precise people and trusty neighbors.

What made the exhibit work so well was the actors. Jackie Gleason owns the material. He doesn’t even have to say a word to provide a hilarious moment. Objective perceive him stew, his face contort while listening to his mother-in-law unprejudiced prior to his famed blabbermouth rant.

Audrey Meadows is perfect. When Gleason sets ‘em up, Meadows’ Alice knocks ‘em down like no one else. Ralph: “The bills will secure bigger & bigger, and I’ll come by less to eat. Then you know what I’ll eye like? ” Alice: “Yeah, a human being.” Episode after episode, she deadpans lop down and nick down with deadly accuracy.

Art Carney’s Norton should have his acquire statue in Washington DC. A terrific actor playing the piece perfectly. Like Meadows, Carney has an uncanny chemistry with Gleason. You really can feel the history between the two characters, as if they’ve been best friends for long enough to be discontinuance friends and long enough to win on each others nerves all the time.

Likewise, you come by the same feeling between Ralph and Alice as well as Norton and Trixie, who — played by Joyce Randolph — is the perfect match for screwball Norton.

Every episode has one belly laugh moment and at least a half dozen substantial lines. I’m buying two sets. One for myself and one for my – Brooklyn born and raised – dad for Christmas.

I bought this because my 11-month-old daughter loves Signing Time Volume 1 of the modern series and I conception the baby version might be even better for her. I was harmful – she’s unbiased not into this one. The novel Signing Time (vol. 1) is distinguished simpler and honest shows kids in natural environments doing the signs. This baby version has more cartoon screech and is worthy more “high-energy” which seems to turn my daughter off (and is less luscious for me as well) . This might be broad for some babies, but mine prefers the simple, low-tech version.

We too were so impressed with the novel Signing Time that we decided to try this one for our nearly one-year-old baby. While we’re not fans of TV for children under two, the first Signing Time was so straight-forward and simple that we were comfortable watching it with our child. It took only a few times of watching it before she was using the signs all the time!

So we were indignant when the Baby version came out and ordered it. But it is procedure too “produced” in comparison to the new one, and the cartoon graphics and music are annoying and distracting. We let the baby peep it once and she sat like a zombie, which vexed us, since she’d been so engaged by the fresh one. But this one is far less effective in terms of teaching her than the low-budget/realistic fresh one.

If you’re looking to commence your child on the path to learning ASL, I strongly recommend you stick with the novel Signing Time series. The Baby version is fair too stop to that mindless entertainment junk you derive in most children’s videos today, which is a precise shame, since the fresh series are so fascinating and interactive.

I gave this two stars as it’s not the worst thing for a baby, but in comparison to the novel series, it was very disappointing.
